Sanuces Ryu Jujitsu was created by Grand Master Dr. Moses Powell.

The system derives its base from Jiu Jitsu, the "Mother Art" from which Karate, Judo, Aikido, etc. were born. According to Dr. Powell, "Sanuces Ryu teaches the skills of blocking, striking, throwing, and subduing in the practical (street) application. It also teaches the 'Art': the movement of an intelligent mind, controlling a disciplined body in a display of speed, form, technique power and gracefulness. Sanuces Ryu is Jiu Jitsu! Jiu Jitsu is the science of striking grabbing or pulling areas of an attacker's body causing severe and intense pain and possibly, debilitating injuries."
The art is the result of the Doctor's many years of martial arts experience. Every move flows from one to the next while each move dictates what the next move will be. The moves are never done while hoping that the opponent will comply: students are taught to "shock" the assailant before taking them down, thus minimizing the opponents possible resistance.

There are no flashy moves in this art, only survival by simplicity. Students are not taught to train for competition: they are trained for an assault in the real world.

Sanuces Ryu is based on spirituality, sureality, simplicity, and survival. Dr. Moses Powell, a 10th degree red belt is one of the true legends of the martial arts world. He is a member of both the Black Belt Hall of Fame and the World Karate Hall of Fame. Dr. Powell was the first martial artist invited to demonstrate martial arts at the United Nations and a featured martial arts demonstrator at the New York World's Fair. Dr. Powell was one of the first African-American martial artists to teach the fighting arts to U.S. law enforcement agencies including the Secret Service and FBI. In addition to these great accomplishments, the Benin Empire of West Africa awarded him the international Benin Award in 1972 for his community work and efforts throughout the world.

Dr. Powell was deeply committed to sharing his knowledge and principles with all. He helps ex-offenders by teaching them self-respect, self-control and honesty through the martial arts. Dr. Powell continued to work with disadvantaged youth and senior citizens around the country until his passing in 2005. Dr. Powell was featured in "Masters of the Martial Arts", "Warrior Within" and many other films. His Sanuces Ryu system is unparalleled in its combat effectiveness and brute simplicity. Dr. Powell was the consummate martial artist and Sanuces Ryu is the ultimate martial art! He gave all praises to the Creator for the blessings, attributes, and successes he received. He also honored his teacher, the late Grand Professor Florendo Vistacion (founder of Vee-Jitsu Ryu), who was laid to rest in January 4, 1999. Vistacion, also known as Professor Vee, would eventually state, "You have surpassed me..." to his former student Dr. Powell.

 Today our goal is to pass on the legacy of such greatness as Dr. Powell. His resounding impact on the martial arts community continues to make headway and his techniques and forms are still practised today.  For a list of schools check out our Directory (coming soon).
